Menelik met his father for the first time when he was in his late twenties, sometime around 973 BC. Menelik hailed from Axum, where his mother ruled.

Menelik brought an entourage to meet his father, who was King Solomon of Israel, the son of King David. Menelik's mother was Queen Makeda of Sheba, who ruled Ethiopia (and Egypt, depending on who you ask).

She had visited Israel after her great merchant, Tamrin, had visited to trade and reported on the wonders of Jerusalem and on how wise and generous King Solomon was.

She decided to visit him and brought great gifts. She was greeted as the royalty she was. Solomon convinced her to convert to Judaism.

Before she left, they had a great feast, and she asked Solomon to stay in the palace overnight. He said, "Okay, just do not steal from me."

Makeda was thirsty in the middle of the night and awoke in search of water. She found some, and then Solomon appeared. He told her not to forget her oath, and she said, "Forget your oath, just let me drink water."

I presume it was after this that they did the deed, it is unclear in the story. Some versions say he tricked her.

As Solomon slept that night, he had a dream. The sun rose over Israel, but it was being mistreated by the Jews. It moved to shine over Ethiopia and Rome.

When Makeda left, he gave her a ring as a "token of faith."

On her way home, she gave birth to Menelik (cause it took that long to get from Israel to Ethiopia, apparently).

As mentioned, Menelik returned to meet Solomon. He brought the ring. Solomon begged Menelik to stay and rule Israel, but Menelik said no. He wanted to rule Ethiopia after his mother passed away.

So Solomon sent many Israelites to Ethiopia to help Menelik rule Jewishly. Some of them weren't very happy about this because they weren't allowed to go back. Therefore, they stole the Ark of the Covenant. Some say Menelik knew when it happened, some say he only found out along the way.

The archangel Michael led them to the Red Sea, where they crossed without incident.

Solomon realized it was gone, but it was too late. He told the priests not to speak of it and put a fake in the temple to save face.

According to some, Menelik founded the Solomonic dynasty in Ethiopia, which ruled until 1974. Historians only recognize it from 1270 to 1974.

Many in Ethiopia accept Menelik as the founder, though. So much so that it is ingrained in their 1955 constitution, which declared that the emperor "descends without interruption from the dynasty of Menelik I, son of Queen of Ethiopia, the Queen of Sheba and King Solomon of Jerusalem."

The Ethiopian Orthodox Church claims that the Ark of the Covenant is in the Chapel of the Tablet at the Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion in Aksum, Ethiopia. A single monk guards it for their entire life, never leaving the church grounds.

I think that is a dumb riddle, personally.
